You’ve probably heard of range anxiety, worrying that your EV won’t get you where you want to go. That’s not a problem for plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) – you just go to the gas station and you’re good to go. For battery electric vehicles (BEVs), the same is not a problem. According to the data survey, the average American drives less than 30 miles per day, which is completely within the range of EV. And deciding where and when to charge your car – at home or at a public EV charging station – is getting easier every day.
Home EV charging
Many electric vehicles can only be charged at home.
Connecting to a standard household electrical outlet is practical for charging any EV when time is not an issue. But many EV drivers may install a Level 2-240V AC charger to increase charging speed.
Level 2 charging stations should be installed by professional EV charger installers. Many local governments and power companies offer EV charger incentives and rebates for purchasing or installing these units.
Some power companies also offer discounted rates for EV charging to reduce the cost of home charging. And most EVs have software that lets you charge the car when electricity prices are lowest.
PUBLIC CHARGING STATIONS
Where can I charge my vehicle while away from home? In addition to EV wall chargers in garages, there are many public options.
Some workplaces offer EV charging services for employees.
Some cities and utilities have installed public charging stations to encourage EV use.
EV retailers often have charging stations in their facilities.
Private companies sometimes offer to customers.
Most of these chargers are Level 2 – 240V AC medium speed chargers. Prices vary.
In addition, there is a large network of charging stations with high-speed Level 3-DC fast chargers. Many are located near shopping and dining outlets, allowing you to pass the time while charging. The larger network of charging stations operating in California are:
