The Infrastructure Act does allow funding for new DC fast charging stations. (Same as a hydrogen refueling station.) But level 2 chargers are much cheaper to build and install, which means the government can get more chargers for the same money. Level 2 chargers can be put into use for only a few thousand dollars, and faster chargers may be 50 to 100 times more expensive.

Britton said that focusing on level 2 chargers makes them a ubiquitous technology. In turn, this will make it easier for people to charge while running errands or work, because (hopefully) there will be less competition for plugs.

Building hundreds of thousands of Level 2 chargers should also make finding one no longer a burden. Many current chargers are scattered in dark corners of hotel parking lots, usually with only a few connectors. Britton said that making them easier to find will help encourage people to recharge their car’s battery packs on the go.

The wording of the infrastructure bill related to electric vehicle charging is very broad, but it at least focuses on making these new chargers easy to use. They must be built in public places, such as parks, shopping malls, multi-unit housing structures, government-owned buildings, or transportation hubs. They can be installed on private property, but only if they can be accessed at least weekly.
